Corrected: Nursing Students to Gain Simulated Experience with Latest Technology

Charleston , IL (02/07/2017) — Lakeview College of Nursing faculty members will be unveiling some new technology to nursing students on Thursday, Feb. 9th from approximately 9 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. at the College's Charleston Campus located at 580 W. Lincoln Ave.  About 15 students who are in the College's mid-level medical-surgical course will be working with the new wireless simulator, a CAE apollo male, with the physical capability to be altered to a female client.

Professors Lanette Stuckey and Rita Wallace will first be orienting the students to the new equipment and will then engage the students in a scenario whereby the patient has cirrhosis which contributes to other health issues which ultimately lead to a life-threatening condition.  The students will have to respond with nursing intervention in order to stabilize the patient.

The new simulator can urinate, bleed, hemorrhage convulse, be intubated and respond to interventions such as fluid resuscitation, medication administration, and application of the CPR process.

Wallace said, "Evidence-based literature proves that students often respond at the bedside in a similar manner with the simulator as real clients.  These practice opportunities are vital for both level of comfort for the students as well as seeing specialty procedures such as chest tube placement, maintenance, and removal.  We are so excited to add this technology to our skills and simulation labs!"

Lakeview College of Nursing is a singe-purpose, private institution that has offered excellence in nursing education since 1894.  Lakeview has been in partnership with Eastern Illinois University, offering a bachelor of science in nursing degree, since 2001.
